The legends of Greece are true. With nearly 10,000 miles of coastline and sublime beaches, sparkling seas and simple fresh food, a holiday to modern-day Greece is everything us everyday gods and goodnesses need.
Mainland Greece is surrounded by dreamy chains of islands, scattered across the Mediterranean Sea. Split into distinct groups, they all share stop and stare scenery and an easygoing atmosphere.
Yet with over two hundred inhabited islands to choose from, where do you begin? Let's run through a few of our favourites, starting in the north-west with Skiathos in the Sporades islands. With over 60 golden beaches and plenty of water sports, Skiathos is as good for families as it is groups of friends.
Heading south to the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes and its smaller sister Kos have long been held in high esteem. Holiday hero islands with the ideal mix of pretty beaches, Greek and Roman ruins and friendly tavernas, families flock to their resorts.
Moving west to the Cyclades, Mykonos attracts a glam, party crowd drawn to its beach clubs and boutique hotels - it's Greece's answer to Ibiza and St Tropez. Santorini is as romantic as they come and shaped like a croissant thanks to a volcanic eruption in the 16th century - its stunning sunsets are honeymoon heaven.
Crete, between the Aegean and the Ionian Seas, is Greece's largest island and has as many myths and legends as it does glorious beaches (ie, a lot). To its north are Zante, which combines wild nightlife and classic golden beaches with some secret secluded spots and incredible wildlife, and Kefalonia, with its timeless feel. Its lush landscape is cross-crossed with winding roads leading to sandy coves and narrow harbours.
Lastly is Corfu, with vivid green mountains tumbling down to its dramatic coastline dotted with more of the sublime beaches Greece is so loved for.
